Houston, TX – Sharing her latest novel, A Good Girl is how award-winning novelist, Johnnie Bernhard, is doing her part to contribute to Women’s History Month.

Bernhard’s novel follows main character, Gracey Reiter and her story, as she learns from the family history in her grandmother’s account written in their family Bible. In alignment with the Women’s History Month 2017 theme, Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business, Bernhard strives to inspire women and girls with her story.

Growing out of a small-town school event in California, Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society.

A former AP English teacher and journalist, Johnnie Bernhard’s passion is reading and writing. PORTLAND, OR – 18 Mar, 2017 – Sumner College is pleased to announce that it has received a new grant of Institutional Accreditation from the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Institutional Accreditation from ABHES has been granted for the Associate Degree in Nursing Program (ADN) and the Practical Nursing Program (PN). The college was formally recognized by ABHES and received an award for an initial Grant of Institutional Accreditation that resulted in zero citations at the Cascade Campus.

Participants who complete 17 week program will receive credentials and credits to further their education

Sharon Baptist Head Start, an early childhood education and social services center, announced their partnership with Bronx Community College’s (BCC) Teacher Education Career PATH Program (TECPP) to provide the college student interns with advanced early childhood education learning experience. The program is based on Sharon Baptist’s creative curriculum design and will render free professional development training leading to a Child Development Associate (CDA). Credentials will be given to all participants who complete the 17 week program, to help them increase their chances of getting employment.

Mike Sweeney Announces His Candidacy for Congress in 31st Congressional District of Texas

GEORGETOWN, TX – 25 Mar, 2017 – Community leader and software CEO cites “the catastrophic impact of Sequestration on Fort Hood, TX; incumbent’s history of voting contrary to conservative values and principles; incumbent’s unwillingness to hold town hall meetings and lack of connection with constituents; and failure of understanding about cyberterrorism.”

Mike Sweeney announced his candidacy today for the Republican nomination in the Texas 31st Congressional District. Sweeney’s campaign is built upon his lifetime of accomplishments in business, community service, international relations and unwavering commitment to true Conservative values.

“Among the many challenges facing our nation today is rebuilding our military, especially Fort Hood,” Sweeney said. “Our current Congressman voted in favor of the Budget Control Act of 2011, generally known as Sequestration, which resulted an increase to the debt ceiling over $6 trillion, and had catastrophic consequences for Fort Hood,  TX,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney further asserted, “Sequestration had an immediate and profound effect on Fort Hood and surrounding communities. Sequestration immediately cost Fort Hood $291 million eliminating funds used for family programs, training, construction, and maintenance. Additionally, our Congressman voted in favor of a bill that resulted in the furlough of 6,000 civilian employees. Since Sequestration, Fort Hood has lost approximately 16,000 personnel. The priorities of the constituents living in the Texas 31st Congressional District, Fort Hood and surrounding communities, our military and Veterans must be a priority that goes beyond mere words, but in to action. The incumbent’s actions have not supported his words.”

Sweeney promised that his top priority is the constituents of Texas’s 31st Congressional District. “They will be heard and I will get results,” said Sweeney. Sweeney believes in conservative principles, constitutional governance, and fiscal responsibility. He also believes we need to work hard to improve failing infrastructure, address cyberterrorism, provide access to affordable healthcare, grow the economy and create jobs, and keep our country safe from terrorism and illegal immigration.

“Congress and the Texas 31st Congressional District need leadership, not just someone who avoids his constituents and the issues,” Sweeney said. “I’ve spent my adult life working hard to earn my success and I am ready to bring to Congress my strong work ethic, record of accomplishment, and devoted service.” 

Sweeney is a software CEO whose experience includes building international relations and coordinating with high-level government officials in Iran, Africa and Israel. He has served on governing boards in banking and the public utility industries. Presently, Sweeney is an elected official who serves his community on the Board of Directors of the Chisolm Trail Special Utility District (CTSUD), that provides services to nearly  8,700 water accounts, representing about 21,750 customers, in a 377 square-mile service area that extends northwest from Georgetown into Bell and Burnet counties. He was instrumental in the merger of CTSUD with the City of Georgetown that resulted in 20% cost savings, and eliminated $70 million dollars in duplicate projects, while ensuring improved water service for all customers.

With his background in computer systems and software development, Sweeney clearly understands the cyberterrorism threat that faces America. “We need a congressman who understands encryption and cyber threats. Every week there is a cyberterrorism incident in the news that affects infrastructure, business and individual privacy. Cyberterrorism is a daily threat to America that originates from within our own borders and from foreign threats around the world.”

“My motto is ‘Be Heard, Get Results’. Constituents of the Texas 31st Congressional District are disappointed with their incumbent. They have had enough with career politicians who have are more loyal to Washington and special interests than to the people whom they pledged to serve. Film Review: The Last Revolutionary – The Revolution is at hand

LOS ANGELES, CA – 27 Mar, 2017 – An article in the New York Times last week spoke to Italian philosopher Julius Evola (1898-1974), as someone whom Stephen K. Bannon, Trump’s White House Chief Strategist and Senior Advisor, mentioned in remarks he made to a Vatican conference in 2014. Evola was the presumed father of Traditionalism, a doctrine, which teaches that equality and progress are exactly the opposite of what’s needed if we are to evolve as a functioning society.

This is a thinker, whom Mussolini respected to such a degree that he invited him to tea so they could discuss their shared ideas. But Evola eventually found Mussolini’s fascism too tame, too watered down. He preferred the Nazis. You can read Bannon’s remarks in their entirety where he tries, unsuccessfully, to hide his extremism with run-of-the mill nationalist language, but it’s clear that the man who has the president’s ear admires fascism. A lot.

Soon after reading the article, I went to this year’s Pan African Film Festival here in Los Angeles, where I had the good fortune to see The Last Revolutionary, powerful film, whose lasting effect sneaks up on you like a hand grenade loaded with vision. It starts out light and humorous with excellent and effective dialogue between two old friends—one a militant, the other, formerly so—and ends with a sucker punch to the stomach. Directed by Michael Brewer, produced by Madeleine Liebert* and written by Levy Lee Simon, who acted alongside the gifted John Marshall Jones (Bosch, Rectify, In the Cut) in the film, The Last Revolutionary, like the NYT article, takes us into the why.

Why we need to stay vigilant, apprehensive and resistant to the voices that tell us we exaggerate when we use the word fascist to describe Donald Trump; that we are being “hysterical” when we spy Mussolini in his comportment; that we sound like whiny liberals when he doesn’t decry neo-Nazi supporters; that we will never engage his base with that kind of language; that black people need to be happy with the progress we’ve made; that we dare to be mindful of the past in order to foresee the future.

James Baldwin, whose words narrate a powerful documentary now in theaters called I Am Not Your Negro, says it best when he warns, “History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us. We are our history. If we pretend otherwise, we literally are criminals.”

We are not imagining the worst. The worst is at hand, and so must be the revolution.
