Millions of people from regions around the world are subjected to some of the most inhumane treatment including slavery, sexual exploitation, genital mutilation, religious/political persecution and human trafficking. The vast majority of these survivors want only to improve their situations, which is why the nonprofit charitable group Safe Port Initiative will soon be launching Distance Education for Survivors of Persecution.

This Distance Education for Survivors of Persecution program will initially assist 40 survivors of human trafficking in Kenya and Morocco, along with 20 refugees in Lebanon. In partnership with corporate entities in these countries, Safe Port Initiative has obtained access to videoconferencing facilities, which will enable students to learn skill sets vital to their ongoing survival. The students will range from seven years old up to adulthood.

Safe Port Initiative has helped hundreds of human trafficking survivors through more than 60 rescue operations and recovery services. In that time, members have recognized that survivors need more than mere supplies, they need knowledge for ongoing survival and personal development. Through the Distance Education for Survivors of Persecution program, survivors can obtain these skills to improve their lives as well as those around them.

Safe Port Initiative has secured relationships with governmental and private organizations in Mexico, Morocco, Turkey, Kenya, Lebanon, China and India. These relationships have provided classrooms and videoconferencing equipment that are essential to distance learning. It only costs $10 per week per student to teach using this system.

This program will help dozens of survivors who will then be able to transfer acquired skills to family and friends, but the start up costs are substantial. Safe Port Initiative estimates that the pilot program will cost $28,800. To raise these funds, the group has sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. “Adding metadata can be a time consuming chore. And without metadata your images cannot be easily found, if ever. Adding metadata can take minutes per image, and if a service is available that does that automatically and somewhat reliably, it’s a win for everyone. Even supplementing existing metadata with colors and additional keywords is useful, “explains David Breslauer, MerlinOne Sales and Marketing Support Manager.

Merlin parses the computer analysis data into metadata fields specifically created for that purpose. Background and foreground colors, automated keywords and a numeric scale for how memorable an image is are all available for searching. Dallas, Oregon – April 21, 2016 – The Hoffman Farm released a volunteer program to share, teach, and learn with over forty participants within the first year. The program was well-received, and now the farm wants to expand this sustainability and land reclamation program to educate more people. However, a project this large needs help from the community. The Hoffman’s launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $8,000 by May 19, 2016. Funds received will give the farm a new irrigation system to provide water to their furry friends and garden and develop more facilities to educate, demonstrate, and research.  

Currently, the farm has a watering system that is above ground with hoses stretching over two acres, which cannot support the 14.22 acres’ expansion. Without this new irrigation system, the farm cannot expand this life-changing program to teach more people about the importance of sustainability.

CARMEL, IN – 21 Apr, 2016 – Sleepless nights are common for new parents, but it’s the sleepless days for the new parents on the Wild Birds Unlimited Owl Nest Cam that will be so fun to watch. This year, Mama Owl laid three eggs, the first on March 5. The first egg hatched on April 7, the second April 9 and the third chick was spotted on April 10^th. Through the live streaming video, viewers can observe how quickly these babies mature, family interaction, mealtimes as well as witness the owlets exploring before they fledge from the nest.

“From the time the eggs are laid to when the youngsters leave the nest, every day is a thrill,” said Jim Carpenter, founder and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited. “We spend a lot of time watching them, and even though I know it’s just a part of nature, it’s hard to see them go when they move out.”

Since 2010, Carpenter has hosted the camera-equipped owl box in his wooded backyard in central Indiana. Set more than 30 feet high against the trunk of a pignut hickory tree, the box has been home to a series of occupants, including squirrels and raccoons.

“It’s not just for bird and nature enthusiasts,” added Carpenter. “It’s enjoyable for families, and it’s a fun education tool for teachers to use in their classrooms.”

The young owls will leave the nest after four to five weeks and remain in the branches of the nest tree until they are able to fly at around 10 weeks. Siblings will stay together throughout the summer and are fed by their parents. Finally, the young will strike out on their own in late summer when the adults slowly wean them from feedings.

Wegert, a master-level martial artist and business owner, says that the target audience for this book will be parents of families.

“Growing up in a large, tight-knit family, and having been homeschooled, I expected that most families were like mine and that kids would be a lot like me,” says Wegert, 25.  “It turns out that most families are very different than mine, and a lot of kids aren’t learning character traits and life skills like I did.”

Wegert practices and teaches American Freestyle Karate, and through his program at Super Kicks, focuses on character development for families.  His centers teach children and adults together, oftentimes in the same class.
